What is MigrateFromWindows.com? Simply put, MigrateFromWindows.com aims to be the best resource for people investigating a move, or migration, from the Windows operating system to any alternative operating system. Two examples of alternatives to Windows are Linux and the Mac OS. We want to be the first place people come looking for how-to information, tutorials, step-by-step instructions and links to other great websites that help people learn: -how to choose an alternative OS, -what programs will run, or are similar to ones they use now, -the best way to transfer and or convert their data, -and how to configure an alternative OS so that they can be comfortable and productive! Remember, migrating from one OS to another doesn't have to be a nightmare! Who are we? Well, right now, the "we" is just me. My name is Derek Moyes. I own and operate a computer consultancy in San Antonio, TX named SofTouch Systems. I have almost twenty years of computer hardware and software experience, including many long years with Windows 2.0 through Windows 7 and everything in-between, as well as Mac OS 6 through OSX Leopard, and probably ten or twelve Linux distributions. I pretty much grew up with networking, graduating from LANtastic to Netware to Windows NT and now finally just straight up TCP/IP. I have extensive experience with MS Exchange, Active Directory and Windows in general. Recently I ran my personal machine on SourceMage Linux for about two years, and worked at a (now defunct) company where I ran first Windows, then a RedHat machine, then Fedora during the Core 1 switch-over, then a simple Debian Woody box and finally a G4 PowerBook with Mac OS X Panther, all the while doing on-site and telephone Windows technical support. To say I am well versed in operating systems would be a small understatement! For myself (for now) I've chosen to run the Mac OS. I'm a recent switcher, Nov. 2004, and am really enjoying it. I currently own an Apple BlackBook 13" running Mac OS X Leopard, a Core Duo Mac Mini, also running Leopard, an IBM Desktop running Windows XP Pro, a clone Linux box that's Ubuntu 9.04, a G4 15" Powerbook (for my wife) and an iMac G5 for my son running Leopard as well. My two brothers and their wives have also recently switched, Joel in AZ and his wife in Dec 2006, and Benjamin in CO earlier this year. My sister Jennifer recently bought herself a MacBook for college, and she told me the other day that she hasn't touched her (Windows) PC in weeks! Now if only I could get any of them to write articles for me. :-)
